Pramoedya Ananta Toer

Born in 1925, in Blora, northern part of Java.
He was introduced as "the most important Indonesian writer", "Conscience of Indonesia" or "Humani-
tarian Writer" in his life. He spent 17 years in prison of his 80 years of life. But what made him great
was his short stories and novels which stand alongside the world-famous literay works with their
utmost beauty mixed with the messages addressed to the social injustice.

Pramoedya died in late April of 2006 shortly after the interview with a Korean scholar, Ko Young-hun,
majoring in Indonesian Literature. The interview was <ASIA>'s first and last face-to-face meeting
with him. <ASIA> dedicates our warmest tribute to the memory of Pramoediya and his rich, full life.
